For this lab you are being asked to consider and complete the following:
A) There is a collection of poems titled, “Love’s Labor Lost”; what is this labor that the title suggests, what is “lost”, how did something become “lost” and can it ever be truly “found” if something is “lost”? For this question, really consider what this concept of “loss” or “lost” truly signifies and then apply thequestion to answer.
B) Especially for the poem titled, “What lips my lips have kissed, and where, and why (Sonnet XLIII)”, analyze and explain the lines:
“but the rain
Is full of ghosts tonight, that tap and sigh
Upon the glass and listen for reply,”
and
“I only know that summer sang in me
A little while, that in me sings no more”.
Do not look at any of the other lines or bring in outside context; simply put, examine these two phrasesand explain their meaning and significance; what is the author trying to say?
C) “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” brings up metaphorical imagery of a cloud, daffodils, stars, and waves. What is the significance behind the use of these seemingly random choices from the author, how do they simultaneously connect with each other AND dissociate with each other? Explain the symbolism behind each choice and how that factors in for the author’s choices.
D) “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love” reads deeply into compact metaphors. Considering the author’s life, the diction, the metaphors and imagery used, determine whom the speaker is truly addressing and identify the listener. Lastly, connect the following pieces and themes present within the poem: Man, the Natural World, Time. What is the author trying to suggest here and what is the inverse present within the poem?
